Denny’s D-Fusion Rocket CupKen Murphy / 4:40 am May 26th, 2008 The D-Zone at Denny’s Librarian’s Note: Hey, if it gets rockets in the hands of youngsters so that they can have imaginary space adventures, then I’m all for it. “Big Book of Space Exploration to Color”Ken Murphy / 10:49 pm May 25th, 2008 LaFontaine, Bruce Librarian’s Note: Comprises three earlier Dover coloring books: Exploring the Solar System, History of Space Exploration, and Constellations of the Night Sky. As much for adults as youngsters, these are probably the best and most informative space coloring pages around. “Moon Exploration: Fact & Fantasy”Ken Murphy / 10:27 am May 25th, 2008 LaFontaine, Bruce Librarian’s Note: Took the nephews to Frontiers of Flight Museum today, and picked up an extra copy of this one to donate to the NSS of North Texas Santa Space Toy drive this year. It’s the best Moon-related coloring book I’ve found. “Lunar Nautics: Designing a Mission to Live and Work on the Moon”Ken Murphy / 8:29 pm May 23rd, 2008 Discovery Place Inc. “Rat Trap”Ken Murphy / 1:13 am May 13th, 2008 Daley, Michael J. Comes with a set of removable plastic clings of the Solar system. The packaging said it was a Borders Books exclusive, click the image. “Field Trip to the Moon”Ken Murphy / 2:30 am February 26th, 2008 American Museum of Natural History Librarian’s Note: This is an “Solar System Floor Puzzle 2′ x 3′” (foam puzzle)Ken Murphy / 2:26 am February 26th, 2008 “Solar System Floor Puzzle” Freedom 3 (DVD)Ken Murphy / 3:24 am February 7th, 2008 Katsuhiko Chiba Librarian’s Note: A very well-done anime and interesting story, but it suffers from being too short, too expensive, and who knows how long until the next one. (Supposedly Feb. 26th, still waiting at mid-June. I have a feeling the HD format is the hiccup here, with the market choosing blu-ray) “Jump into Science: Moon”Ken Murphy / 11:43 pm January 1st, 2008 Tomecek, Steve. Illus. by Higgins Bond & Thomas Buchs “Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy, 2nd Ed.”Ken Murphy / 2:48 am December 27th, 2007 Ridpath, Ian Librarian’s Note: While the title might mislead you into thinking this is a reference for telescope observers, at over 4,200 entries it could really be considered a ‘Dictionary of Space Science”, as a nice companion to Oxford’s “Dictionary of Space Exploration”. “The Moon” episode of “The Universe” (DVD)Ken Murphy / 2:21 am December 27th, 2007 The History Channel Librarian’s Note: The set also includes “The End of the Earth: Deep Space Threats to our Planet”, a much better episode. I’m actually a bit disappointed in “The Moon” episode, which is little more than an update of the 1970s documentaries “New Look at the Old Moon” and “Moon: Old and New” that dwells heavily on the “Big Whack” hypothesis of the Moon’s formation. It’s okay as a modern, elementary-level introduction to the Moon, but watch GaiaSelene if you want to see a more substantial documentary. The set overall is a solid overview of the Solar system. Launch MagazineKen Murphy / 8:42 pm December 1st, 2007 Launch Magazine “The Lunar Exploration Scrapbook” (Hardcover)Ken Murphy / 1:03 am November 28th, 2007 Godwin, Robert Librarian’s Note: The hardcover edition is only available through the Publisher’s web site; the Amazon link on the left is for the softcover. This is an amazing collection of valuable archival material. What’s most noticeable in hindsight are the basic design elements that kept showing up in project after project. Well over 100 drawn from engineering schematics, photos of models, architecture layouts, illustrations, and most with modern CG renderings from two perspectives based on the archival material. This is a rich resource indeed! “Scientific Focus Series: Chang’e 1 (Spacecraft?)”Ken Murphy / 5:35 pm November 22nd, 2007 ? (Peter Peng?) 3D Moon GlobeKen Murphy / 1:15 am November 21st, 2007 3D Moon Globe Librarian’s Note: This appears to have been published in association with some institution, possibly the Beijing Planetarium, but not the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum where I picked it up. A neat little craftwork project for kids to assemble a cardstock Moon globe. |
