EVA Interviews James E. Dunstan

eva-interviews.jpg

Welcome to the first edition of EVA Interviews: The Business of the new Space Age!

I’m delighted to welcome our first guest, James E. Dunstan, partner and lawyer with Garvey, Schubert and Barer in Washington D.C. who focuses on Space, business and the technologies of the future.

Great businesses start with ideas, especially ideas that can solve problems for potential customers. They next build the structure necessary to take those ideas from concept to reality and then (hopefully) on to prosperous endeavour. The first outside professional advisor that a new business hires, to formally get the business off the ground, is a lawyer. It is therefore fitting that this is where we will start. Jim Dunstan has been actively involved in the formation of many new Space ventures as well as those involving other exciting new technologies.

EVA:    Jim, thank you very much for joining us at EVA Interviews and Out of the Cradle! Welcome! I look very forward to our conversation!

Since these interviews are about Space as well as the economic aspects of our exodus Out of the Cradle, I like to start by asking you about Space. I know you do have a personal interest in Space. Can you tell us how your interest started and how it has evolved?

Out of the Cradle Review

Librarian’s Note: First met Virg at the Space Generation Forum, almost a decade ago at UNISPACE III. I was a U.S. delegate, he was a Romanian delegate. There were young delegates from all of the world and it was a terrific two weeks that I still remember vividly (especially the crush I had on Marlene).

Back to the law stuff, Virgil has significantly expanded the work done for his previous book, “Unreal Estate“. The only thing that still seems to be missing is a discussion of dispute resolution mechanisms. In my view ‘property rights’ are pointless if you don’t have a means of adjudicating disputes and then enforcing those judgments. When you do have such a mechanism for resolving disputes, the niceties of how the stuff gets divvied up amongst those who actually go out there and do stuff with it will sort itself out in the way that works best for space. … Hopefully.

The Space Show interviews

Kate in DC gives us a bit too much information in Musings on a Boy. She should just offer to meet him for drinks later to talk about, you know, space stuff.

Librarian’s Note: The Hobbyspace link for Part 2 mentions Yuri’s Night, and the Dancing Snoopy award that is given to volunteers that go above and beyond the call of duty. I think they give out certificates these days, but back in the first year, 2001, the volunteers got medals. Here’s the inside scoop. Back in early 2001 I was doing my ISU internship at Boeing HSF&E, Loretta was, IIRC, at JPL (we knew each other from SGF). I was looking for a stuffed astronaut Snoopy. I knew that Knott’s Berry Farm had Peanuts characters, and so rode my bike out to KBF and visited their giftshop. There I found a few astronaut Snoopy items, mainly keychains. Later, when I was showing the space Snoopy booty to Loretta, and we were talking about the upcoming inaugural 2001 Yuri’s Night in L.A., she had the insight to take the dancing astronaut Snoopy off of the keychain and put it onto a ribbon. Voila, instant award for the volunteers, and not too expensive either. Mine is on the left, and is one of my most cherished possessions.
