Best of the Moon 2008 - High Frontier Fiction

Librarians’ Note: The 75 episodes released to date on DVD weave quite an interesting story of college students on a large spacecraft in orbit around Callisto, one of the moons of Jupiter. There’s a lot of drama as a varied cast of character archetypes rotate through the focus of the story, the adventures of the spaceship ILEA and Columbus College. [My character archetype would be Finbow Lewis, and just like his character I had an immediate crush on Herlinde. I can’t believe I’m that predictable] An errant comet, a megalomaniacal scientist leading humanity’s first step to another star, a desperate rescue, secret nukes and pirates plundering the vast resources of the Jupiter system, leaving the last episode a life-or-death cliff-hanger! This one is definitely an early contender for Best of the Moon 2008 in High Frontier fiction.

Librarian’s Note: This one is quite a taut thriller. Murphy’s Law, human error, and the usual psychopath make for an edge-of-your-seat journey to the Sun.

Librarian’s Note: While the title might mislead you into thinking this is a reference for telescope observers, at over 4,200 entries it could really be considered a ‘Dictionary of Space Science”, as a nice companion to Oxford’s “Dictionary of Space Exploration”.

Librarian’s Note: STK is pretty much the industry-standard software for satellite tracking. It’s come a long way since 2000 when we had a workshop on it during my Masters program at ISU. The basic package is great for an applied mathematics class at the advanced high school level, but probably best suited for introduction at the college level.

Special Alert!: AGI has teamed up with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to apply America’s high tech aerospace tracking systems to following Santa Claus on his global quest to deliver presents/rewards to all of the Good children of the Earth. A special Google YouTube channel has been reserved for the coverage. Details are here!

Librarian’s Note: Features “2007: The Year in Technology” with a number of interesting innovations. My favorite is the paper battery. You can roll it up, use it in the body to power devices, and more. Although the self-healing materials is pretty cool, too. If you work in industry you need to be getting this magazine.

Librarian’s Note: This is an excellent and important paper. This is the one project that the Baby Boom generation (and their kids Gens X & Y) can undertake that will leave a permanent investment in our nation’s posterity, and also serve the world. We invented this, and we can make it happen, though ultimately this is a global project, which means lots of business opportunity.

Part of the solution is that the current oil-producing nations absolutely need to be able to take a stake in the venture. The main end being eliminating the cultural nihilism that would accompany the end of oil production and the ending of the cash flows associated therewith, and moderating some of the more extremist views by a continued investment in energy delivery.

It will be very hard to accomplish, many people will die in horrible ways in space, and it will not be cheap in the beginning. If there was ever a reason to bring back Century Bonds (with 100 year tenors), this would be it. But this is the closest we will come to clean and permanent energy for a while. If we pass on this opportunity, it may be a long time before it returns. If we take it, we can start weaning ourselves from hydrocarbons and their deleterious effects while building a cislunar economy for even greater prosperity for the peoples of the world.

Go read this report.

Librarian’s Note: Exactly! Most of the energy we consume on this planet is second or third-hand solar power anyway - why not just tap the source and cut out the polluting middlemen? Coal is carbon fixed in plants by ancient sunlight-driven photosynthesis. Oil is dead dinosaurs et al, more sunlight-driven stuff. Even hydroelectric is driven by the rains powered by the Sun. Wind is the displacement of differently heated air masses, again sun-driven. Only nuclear and geothermal are non-Sun-related. Let’s stop fighting over the last of the dead dinosaur goo and direct our energies and efforts into creating the kind of infrastructure that can benefit the whole world. Thank you DoD for at least taking the lead on this to highlight its importance for the security of the U.S. of A.

Librarian’s Note: The cover story, ‘Moon Voyagers’ is on the really good documentary “In the Shadow of the Moon”, which opens this Friday at theatres nationwide. I’ve seen most all of the Apollo documentaries, and this one is truly unique in what the documentarian has captured. Well worth a view. Launch provides a nice preview of the film. Also, there’s a great story on Bigelow modules, and a preview of the year 2057 by Ben Bova. Go get your copy now at local national bookstores. (Better yet, save the trouble and subscribe)
