One of the reviewers quoted on the back, Dr. Paul Spudis, happened to be one of the speakers at the event. This one is a cultural review of the Moon in human history. Astronaut Snoopy “Who Knows What Tomorrow Will Bring?” (mug)Ken Murphy / 2:56 am October 14th, 2010 ![]() Astronaut Snoopy Librarian’s Note: Sweet! I think I have a new mug for work. “An Unearthly Howling” (art)Ken Murphy / 11:53 pm September 23rd, 2010
Librarian’s Note: A nice piece I picked up at FenCon this last weekend at the Art Show. It will go well with the other art for kids in the Lunar Library. “009-1: The Complete Series” (DVD)Ken Murphy / 11:53 pm August 3rd, 2010 “009-1: The Complete Series” Librarian’s Note: It’s the end of the 21st Century in an alternate future where the Cold War still rages. A secret agent tries to piece together a mystery that threatens the entire Earth, one that leads her, ultimately, to the Moon. For more mature audiences “Shrapnel: Hubris #2″ (comic)Ken Murphy / 12:12 am July 1st, 2010 Long, Mark, Nick Sagan & Clinnette Minnis. Illus. by Concept Art House Librarian’s Note: The Venusian Freedom Fighters pay a visit to the Moon. “Buck Rogers #12: Moonstruck Pt. 2 - Shoot the Moon!”Ken Murphy / 2:36 am June 27th, 2010 Beatty, Scott. Illus. by Carlos Rafael “Buck Rogers #11: Moonstruck Pt. 1 - Tumbling Down”Ken Murphy / 2:36 am May 27th, 2010 Beatty, Scott. Illus. by Carlos Rafael “Jour J: Les Russes Sur La Lune!”Ken Murphy / 11:22 pm April 23rd, 2010 Duval, Fred & Jean-Pierre Pécau. Illus. par Philippe Buchet Librarian’s Note: Wow, a very unusual story. History changes when a small asteroid ruptures the Eagle LEM, dashing the hopes of the Americans to be the first on the Moon, allowing Валенти́на Терешко́ва to make the first landing a few months later. This completely changes Nixon’s views on a Moon base, and the world pursues a different space trajectory which takes a surprising turn. “Our Created Moon: Earth’s Fascinating Neighbor”Ken Murphy / 12:23 am April 20th, 2010 DeYoung, Don & John Whitcomb Librarian’s Note: Since I published a review of the prior edition of this title, that review has been the single most visited article here at OotC, with almost twice as many as the next most popular one. Not many comments, though. I also picked up another Christian creationist theory title, “Taking Back Astronomy” by Jason Lisle, PhD, who gets a thorough fisking (by a rather reasonable Christian, though with some conjecture in his summary) over at C Sharp. “Calendarium Lunaris”Ken Murphy / 5:06 pm February 22nd, 2010 “Calendarium Lunaris” Librarian’s Note: An interesting find, this is a perpetual Moon phase calculator which taught me a new word - epact. “Dan Cooper Tome 20: Apollo appelle Soyouz” (BD)Ken Murphy / 4:47 pm February 22nd, 2010 ![]() Weinberg, Albert Librarian’s Note: It took some searching in the Quartier Latin to find this one, but I’m glad I took the time to do so. A terrific story of disaster and international cooperation on the Moon. “Dallas Barr Tome 3: Premier Quartier” (BD)Ken Murphy / 4:37 pm February 22nd, 2010 Marvano. Illus. by Joe Haldeman “Curiosités et Vérités à Propos de la Lune”Ken Murphy / 4:19 pm February 22nd, 2010 Fauveau, Nicolas “Le Livre de la Lune”Ken Murphy / 9:50 pm February 16th, 2010 Alberny, Renaud & Christian Clères “La Conquête de la Lune”Ken Murphy / 9:41 pm February 16th, 2010 Mitton, Jacqueline “Le Monde de la Lune”Ken Murphy / 9:32 pm February 16th, 2010 Niel, Frédéric “La Lune en Chiffres”Ken Murphy / 9:27 pm February 16th, 2010 Pascal, Antoine “Moon” (DVD)Ken Murphy / 1:26 am January 13th, 2010 Jones, Duncan (Dir.) Librarian’s Note: Will this be the movie that demonstrates to the movie studios that there is in fact a market for smart science fiction? Whilst compiling the Lunar Library entry for this item it was ranked #10 (blu-ray) and #26 (DVD) at Amazon, and when I went to my local electronics bigbox to pick up a copy I got the next to last one. Personally, I like the way the movie examines the philosophical question of the industrialization of human beings via cloning. “To The Moon: An Anthology of Lunar Poems”Ken Murphy / 4:46 pm December 19th, 2009 Duffy, Carol Ann (Ed.) “The Moon: ‘Houston, Tranquility Base Here. The Eagle Has Landed’”Ken Murphy / 3:34 pm November 24th, 2009 Blühm, Andreas “The Moon” (DVD)Ken Murphy / 1:30 am October 17th, 2009 “The Moon” Librarian’s Note: Serene Selene…this is a nice ambient background video of our Moon moving across a fixed field of view, and works best on flatscreens. It makes a very nice “Moon in my Room” for grown-ups. Also provides many teachable moments at parties as the image is sharp enough to be able to point out numerous features and even perturbations in the Earth’s atmosphere. |
