EVA Interviews Will Pomerantz about the Google Lunar X PRIZE

eva-interviews-lunar-editions.jpg

Welcome to the second in a series of Lunar Editions of EVA Interviews: The Business of the new Space Age™. In the first of this series, EVA went directly to the source and interviewed the Moon about its expectations for future lunar commercial activities. Coming back down to Earth, this next interview focuses on the organization whose actions and incentives are helping to make business on the Moon a reality. My guest is William Pomerantz Senior Director of Space Prizes for the X PRIZE Foundation.  With 19 teams now entered into the competition for the Google Lunar X PRIZE, these contestants and this prize are at the forefront of expanding commerce beyond Earth, and to the Moon.

EVA:     Hi Will, I’m delighted to have you here at EVA Interviews and Out of the Cradle. I often assume that everyone is familiar with the Google Lunar X PRIZE, as you have received a great deal of publicity so far. In case that assumption is incorrect (or as a refresher, if true), could you please tell us how the Google Lunar X PRIZE came in existence and what the X PRIZE Foundation, and Google, are hoping to achieve with this prize?

Librarian’s Note: I visited the Art Show while I was down at Armadillocon 31 to speak on the Return to the Moon panel, but wasn’t early enough to get the quick sale on this one. It went to auction and I had to go through a bidding war to get it for the Lunar Library, but I think it’s a terrific addition to the Lunar art collection.

Librarian’s Note: Billed as ‘Wacky Science Fiction Series’, this anime tells the story of Mix Juice, a girl group of wannabe pop stars, whose manager decides to make them famous with a performance as the first band on the Moon. They get there, but they should have read their contract a bit more carefully.

I haven’t fallen off the face of the Earth…

nor the Moon either.

I’m just going through a wicked bout of writer’s block, precipitated by the double-whammy weekend of Moon Day and CoS 112.

That, and I’ve been reading, not writing. I’ve finished up Frondel’s ‘Lunar Mineralogy’, and am two-thirds of the way through Halacy’s ‘Colonization of the Moon’, so there will be a couple of reviews in the not too distant future.

I’m also working on an article where I reflect on a question that the Dallas Morning News reporter asked me at the Moon Day event that I didn’t have an answer for then, and apparently still don’t now, as the blog post is not to my satisfaction thus far. I’m hoping to get it done this week, but I may have to do a major overhaul.

I’m also a little pressed for time, as I have to prep for a panel I’m going to be on this Saturday at ArmadilloCon 31 down in Austin, entitled “Return to the Moon: Can we Stay There?” Then next Friday the 21st I’m going to speaking at the Park Cities Rotary Club about the Moon. Oh, and I do have a personal life and a day job not related to space in any way, shape, or form, so mucho going on for the limited time I have available in my life. I so need to get secretary.

Speaking of mucho goings on, the Carnival of Space continues its ongoing voyage through the blogoverse. After the Big Moon Day Show here at OotC, it moved on to Dynamics of Cats for the 113th Carnival of Space. As far as I’m concerned trying to herd cats is like trying to order chaos, with questionable results for the effort expended. Give me a good ol’ reliable dog any day of the week (although cats will probably get to the Moon first).

The CoS then pulled up stakes and moved on to Cheap Astronomy for the 114th Carnival of Space. Straightforward, nothing fancy, just straight information to maximize your valuable time with cheap astronomy.

The most recent editions, this week’s 115th Carnival of Space pays a visit to a new blog, New Frontier News. So blast on over and check it out!
