Librarian’s Note: At last, my belated birthday present to myself has arrived. There’s an 11×17″ page folded into a four page booklet giving some background on how the rocks on the Moon are believed to have formed, and 2.5 pages of descriptions of the minerals in the set and why they are similar to Moon rocks returned to Earth by the Apollo astronauts. The Pyroxmangite substituted for Pyroxferroite is just a beautiful pink and grey example. The stony chondrite has beautiful metal inclusions. This is a really nice set. I’m going to be able to do some really good educational space outreach with this.
Just in case some folks are unclear on this, these rocks are all of terrestrial origin. Or arrival, in the case of the meteorite. NASA does not let normal folks play with or possess their Apollo rocks. More details on JSC Astromaterials Curation can be found here.
